Avia has introduced the Smart SolarPro, a compact solar panel for charging its Deadbolt+ smart lock. When working together, the smart lock can stay charged via natural sunlight for up to five years.

An issue with most smart home devices is the battery life, unless they’re plugged into an outlet. Before my current smart video doorbell was installed, I had one that was battery operated, and I always had to go out and charge it. The same is true of the smart lock on our door. I got so tired of changing out batteries, I just left it dead. Luckily, it opens via standard keys, but that eliminates the entire reason for having a smart lock. Smart device maker Avia has addressed this problem with the Smart SolarPro. It’s a compact solar panel that connects to the Avia Smart Deadbolt+ Smart Lock and keeps it charged for up to five years in strong sunlight.

The duo when working together allows up to 100 lock and unlock operations per day under optimal conditions. The solar panel charges the lock with natural sunlight, no extra batteries or charging is required. Also, the smart lock system is compatible with Apple Home Key, Bluetooth, and Apple Home Hubs. Needless to say, that gets rid of a lot of pain points associated with using a modern smart lock.

What else can you tell us about Avia smart home devices?

The Smart SolarPro works with the Avia Smart Deadbolt+, obviously, so you’ll want both if you plan to get the panel. That said, they install in minutes easily, and blend seamlessly with home exteriors. You can install them yourself, and you don’t have to worry about an ugly device acting in contrast to your home decor. The lock also features a AAA security rating, with an award-winning design.

Cool, cool, cool. So what is it? What does the Avia Smart Deadbolt+ actually do? It’s pretty simple, really. It replaces your standard, dumb deadbolt with one that’s smart and has advanced features. There are eight ways to unlock it, including using your phone, Apple’s Siri, or a key. It auto-locks with a time delay when you leave, so you never have to worry about whether you forgot to lock up. It also has an illuminated keypad that’s great for low-light conditions or at night.

Remote access via the app allows you to lock or unlock, set PIN code access for guests, see who’s coming or going, and much more. It’s a smart lock with solid security, advanced features, and remote access all for a relatively accessible cost — especially when you consider you don’t need professional installers. But the solar panel that essentially keeps the lock charged for a long, long time is certainly one of the best callouts here. The only downside, at least for someone like me, is that the front of my house and doorway is under the cover of an entryway and doesn’t get much sunlight.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants a smart lock with all the bells and whistles, but not the hassle of changing or charging batteries regularly. You’ll need both the Avia Deadbolt+ and the SolarPro panel to benefit.
