The StationPC PocketCloud is a portable NAS for use on the go with solid-state drive bays and lots of excellent features. It’s built for professionals and creatives and works anywhere so you can have peace of mind and data backup opportunities everywhere you go.

Generally, a NAS or network-attached storage is a dedicated, personal cloud storage system that remains static. You create file storage on a dedicated device or server that you can access anywhere, remotely, but that server, the hardware, remains in one location like your office or a side room or even in a workspace somewhere. StationPC has changed that with the PocketCloud. It is, quite figuratively, an ultra portable NAS with SSD support that’s designed for professionals and creatives to take with them on their travels. It’s portable, powerful, and private, and it goes where you go. That’s pretty darn neat.

Inside the PocketCloud shell is a solid-state drive slot supporting up to 8TB of capacity on its own, and up to 16TB with the optional dock (another 8TB slot is in the dock). There are also five backup methods, meaning you can backup data from your devices in several ways. You can use the SD card slot, USB, Wi-Fi 6, or AP mode with a built-in hotspot. You can also used wired Ethernet, but you’ll need the dock. Also inside are dual 3200mAh replaceable batteries. They provide up to six hours of continuous use and up to 20 days of power in standby. An advanced cooling system keeps everything performing optimally when under heavy loads, like transferring lots of data at once. Moreover, the aluminum alloy body design is tough and perfect for travel.

A physical knob rests on the front for easy controls, meanwhile a small LCD screen shows you active modes, details, and battery info at a glance.

What exactly can you do with a portable NAS like PocketCloud?

The primary use for a portable NAS like the PocketCloud is to backup your data, anywhere. You could backup photos and videos from your phone or documents from your laptop or work terminal. I’d be curious if you can use it as a quick media server to stream files from, but that would likely run down the battery fast and the speeds would probably create a bottleneck. It’s mostly for quick and easy file backups, data transfers, and potential collaboration, such as sharing your work or document files with those nearby, like your colleagues.

Over USB-A it features 220MB/s read speeds and 208MB/s write speeds. For Ethernet, that’s faster, at 275MB/s read and 280MB/s write. But it offers 65MB/s upload and 68MB/s download over Wi-Fi, 58MB/s read and 59MB/s write over SD, and 65MB/s upload and 68MB/s download over AP mode.

The optional dock allows you to backup, expand storage, and charge the portable NAS all from one place. Presumably, the dock would stay at home, while the portable NAS travels with you, but it’s small enough to toss into a bag or carry-on luggage, too. Of course, the PocketCloud also comes with access to StationPC’s NAS software across platforms. But ultimately, it’s one hell of a storage expansion and backup solution.

Who is it for?

Photographers, videographers, creatives, professionals, and those with lots of data that needs backing up regularly.
