Don’t want to buy new devices to lock down your kids’ activities? The Bark parental control app works with what you already have.
My kids already have their own phones and tablets. I know, I must be crazy, right? I have them locked down pretty good. I have to approve apps, I disabled a lot of stuff I don’t want them using, and I keep an eye on what they’re doing. But sometimes, I wish I had a lot more control and visibility into their digital lives. Short of buying them brand new Bark phones, for kids, I’d rather just use the devices they already have. Enter the Bark parental control app. Now, we don’t normally cover mobile apps here, but this one is an exception.
You can use it to block apps and websites, preventing your kids from accessing stuff they shouldn’t. You can also set screen time schedules to keep your children focused on what matters most. Install it across a variety of devices, including Android, iOS, Chrome, Amazon, Windows, and more. Most importantly, you can monitor texts, emails, app usage, and even seek guidance on parenting. Licensed child psychologist advice and guidance is available through the app for parents, for example.
It’s one of the best parental control apps I’ve seen and goes beyond anything other companies offer, including Google’s Family configuration(s).
Why use Bark as a parental control app?
My kids have my old devices. That is, I’ve given them my old phones and tablets. It’s cheaper and easier than buying new gear. But I still want full control over what they’re doing and what they can access. The Bark app delivers there. It also scans for dangers they might encounter, online or off. You’ll get notifications about potential predators, suicidal ideations, violence, and more. You’ll know exactly when something is wrong so you can take action.
How does it do this? By monitoring the interactions your child has on the installed device. If they mention something untoward in chat with friends or even strangers — like while playing games or using other apps — it will let you know.
You can also use it to track your child’s location in real-time, which essentially reports where the device is. You’ll know if they’re walking, driving, or biking, how fast they’re going, and much more.
It’s totally free to try, although, if you decide to keep using it, it’s $14 per month. I don’t know that I’d necessarily use it for an older teen with more autonomy, but it’s great for younger kids. My kids are at ideal ages to keep a close eye on them. This tool makes the process more efficient, effective and practical.
