The GoChess Wizard series is a smart chessboard set, like the original GoChess, except with a licensed Harry Potter theme. It’s designed after the chess scene in the original Harry Potter The Philosopher’s Stone, featuring Ron, Hermione and Harry.

I’ve covered the impressive GoChess smart chessboard system before. It’s pretty damn cool and adds a unique spin to the age-old game of chess with online support. Well, Particula has personalized and upgraded the design to deliver GoChess Wizard, a Harry Potter themed smart chessboard. Yes, it’s officially licensed with Warner Bros. It’s the same board that Harry, Ron, and Hermione faced in the dungeon in the first movie. Each piece follows the same respective design as the pieces on the wizard’s board. It offers real-time coaching with mobile app support, online play through Lichess and Chessdotcom, and comes with a mobile phone or tablet stand to prop up whichever device you’re using while you play.

The table charges via USB-C and comes with 32 standard pieces, the board, and two matching pouches. Like the original board, there are two variants, Wizard Lite, which is full size, and Wizard Mini, which is compact. They both come with the same unique features, offer the same five to ten hours of battery life, but they’re different sizes. The compact model is great for portable use for family trips.

What’s so special about a smart chessboard?

This video is for the original GoChess board but the Harry Potter-themed board uses similar technology.

The GoChess smart chessboards are not your average setup. You don’t just play them solo (you can, though), or with another person face-to-face, you can also play against AI to hone your skills and learn, or play against others online. GoChess boards like this Harry Potter board also light up as you play, illuminating the spaces underneath pieces to show you an overview of what’s happening. That’s also how the real-time coaching works.

The AI opponent has up to 32 difficulty levels from beginner to pro. You can play real games, practice, experience unique scenarios, and more. Through the Chessdotcom and Lichess integrations you can play with over 200 million players worldwide, without ever leaving the comfort of your home, cabin, or hotel room. You will need internet access though.

Who is it for?

Anyone, of any age, who wants to play or learn chess. Also, Harry Potter fans.
