The Zerowriter Fold is a new contender in the portable, distraction-free writing device market with its e-ink word processor designed exclusively for writers everywhere. No distractions. No procrastination. And there are no subscriptions — you pay once and own it forever.
As a writer, I’m always drawn to distraction-free devices built with a purpose. They help remove all those whispering and nagging events, notifications, and apps that help to keep you endlessly sidetracked. Some people don’t need that stuff and it’s great. For others, with raging ADHD, it’s a miraculous help. Freewrite’s budding list of devices are a great example. But there’s a new contender in the mix. Allow me to introduce you to Zerowriter Fold. Technically, they’ve been in the game since 2025 with the Zerowriter Ink, but we’ll ignore that for now.
The Fold is a “paper-like” word processor built specifically for writers to focus on, well, writing. The 6-inch e-ink display supports weeks of battery life, alongside the rechargeable battery, of course. It also has an integrated mechanical keyboard for that typewriter-esque clickiness and user-controllable lighting. It’s portable and foldable, too, so should fit just fine in a backpack or daybag. The front light with adjustable brightness allows you to work in dark environments, bright environments and everything in between. It sounds like a tappy writer’s dream. Oh, and it has a Micro SD slot for expandable storage.
What’s so great about the Zerowriter Fold e-ink word processor?
Some devices like this require you to subscribe to an online or cloud service or some kind of app-based system. Not Zerowriter. There are no subscriptions. No additional fees. You can also write anywhere, anytime, with zero distractions. Hence the name. No AI is used anywhere either so you don’t have to worry about any high-tech data-stealing bullshit creeping into your workflows. If you like old-school typewriters, and offline experiences, this is perfect for you because it still includes modern trappings. You can create plain text files, and work with Word docs, Google Docs, Pages, and more.
You can also easily manage your files and folders or share to a phone with QR code export. Zerowriter Fold also supports markdown rendering for web so you can write for your blogs or online sites, Fountain rendering for screenwriters, sprint tools with live word counts, custom bookmarks and file switching. You can also configure custom fonts and text sizes if you need to adjust for your personal viewing. Additionally, the team says an option to push your work to cloud services (if you want to) is in development.
When you’re ready to start, take it out, unfold it, power it up, and start working. When you’re done, close it up, pack it away, and go. No internet browser or emails, no messages, no pop-ups or notifications, all writing, your way, every day, all day. Hell yeah.
The Zerowriter Fold was funded on Kickstarter in 42 minutes. The first units are scheduled to be shipped to backers in March 2027.
