I have sensitive skin. Generally, any brands that claim its products are for “sensitive skin,” are full of it. I know this because time and time again, I spring for a gadget, tool, or item that’s “sensitive” compatible and I quickly find out it’s not. Why am I droning on about this? Because the Sud Scrub is a body scrubber designed for sensitive skin like mine. On paper, or on the screen, it sounds excellent, but sounding excellent and actually providing a top-notch experience in the real world are two different things.

For what it’s worth, I’m happy to report the Sud Scrub does indeed provide an excellent experience. But what is it, what are the finer details, and why the hell am I writing a review? Grab a drink or a snack and let’s dive in.

What is the Sud Scrub?

Sub Scrub is a uniquely designed body scrubber for use in the shower or bath. It’s made of non-toxic, food-grade silicone that has been infused with antimicrobial silver and zinc. That infusion purportedly fends off odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew which likes to grow on the surface of things like this. If you’ve ever used a comparable luffa or a scrubber before, you know how prevalent that last statement is. Leaving items like this in the shower or bathroom where its wet and humid can encourage the growth of nasties like mold or mildew.

Each Sud Scrub is designed to last one year. And while I haven’t had anywhere close to a year’s time with it yet, I do believe that’s a true statement. The scrubber stays clean even after weeks or months of use and continues to act as a great exfoliator. That’s thanks to a proprietary scrubbing surface with fins that gently exfoliate skin and unclog pores. They also help remove impurities, and I have used mine successfully several times to clean off oily films such as sunscreen and lotion.

A handle strap on the back makes it easy to hold, even in the shower when you’re soapy and slippery. Plus, there’s a convenient hanger loop on the top you can use to mount it on a shelf or hook system. You might want some hooks for your shower if you don’t have any; Sud Scrub offers a shower hook as well.

But there’s something a lot more interesting about Sud Scrub that we need to talk about.

CleanHub Verified: The Sud Scrub promise

There is a CleanHub X Sud Scrub version of this body scrubber that I’ve covered here in the past. It’s the same Sud Scrub, so the same design, in a unique dark blue color, but the biggest difference is that 100% of the profits go to fund plastic waste cleanup through CleanHub. Originally introduced for Earth Day, the collaboration allows you to participate in the incredible mission to clean up our oceans.

If you’ve never heard of it, CleanHub is a nonprofit that diligently works to eliminate the growing plastic problem in our oceans. Not only through the collection of ocean-bound plastic and waste but also a genuine movement towards the slowdown of plastic use through the support of sustainable brands. CleanHub collects waste, stopping open burning, dumping, and pollution in waves. I think you’ll agree that’s an impressive mission.

But here’s the thing: The regular Sud Scrub contributes, too. When you buy a Sud Scrub, the normal version, you help remove up to five pounds of plastic from the environment. It’s plastic-free, with no microplastics whatsoever and it’s also 100% recyclable. If there are no curbside or recycling programs in your area that will handle silicone, you can send it back to Sud Scrub directly. When you do, they’ll give you a $5 credit, which you can apply toward the purchase of a new one. Since they last a full year, I’d say that’s more than reasonable.

But what if all of this is a gimmick? How does the Sud Scrub work? My answer is swimmingly. Scrub a dub dub, it’s a Kenney in the tub. That’s my last name if you didn’t already know.

What to know before you try

Now, look, it’s not perfect, but nothing ever is. I’m enjoying it, my kids love it, and my wife likes using the Sud Scrub, as well.

Although the Sud Scrub works great and I’m more than satisfied with my experience, there are some things you should know beforehand. I have sensitive skin, as I’ve said, so I’m very particular about the soaps and shampoos I use. I try to stay away from liquid and gel soaps, which, unfortunately, seem to work best with the Sud Scrub body scrubber because of the way it’s designed. That’s not to say you can’t use other types of soap, like bar soap, but you won’t get an overzealous lather like you do with a luffa.

That doesn’t bother me. I still feel clean after every wash and I’m happy with the amount of soap I’m able to use. But if you’re the type that loves that extra lather, you might find the Sud Scrub somewhat frustrating. I wouldn’t necessarily let that stop you, however. The Sud Scrub isn’t expensive, in fact, it’s downright accessible, so you might want to give it a try to see how it is.

You may have to clean it from time to time, but it’s easy. Scrubbing between the fins with mild dish soap, water and an old toothbrush works. You can also boil it in hot water for two minutes or so to sterilize it.

There’s not much more to it than that.

What’s the verdict, and the price?

I am thoroughly impressed. Even after months of use, my Sud Scrub is still as clean as the day it arrived. No nasty mold, mildew, or residues in sight. But, of course, we all know that bacteria can be invisible. I can’t scientifically claim it’s working, as I haven’t put it under a microscope, but by all rights, it seems like the claims are true.

What I can share is how it makes my skin feel, which is wonderful. My skin comes away feeling soft and clean, and the Sud Scrub doesn’t seem to harm or irritate me in any way. To me, that counts for a lot. Plus, it always feels good to support a sustainable and eco-friendly brand, whether that’s your primary goal or not.

They also offer face scrubbers and kid-friendly scrubbers. The prices are more than reasonable, especially when you consider you can use these products for a full year before replacing.
