Snacks are a necessity for most. Healthy or not, they help satiate your appetite when you don’t want a full meal. Depending on how many calories you have set aside per day, they also help make up the total. It’s not really a surprise that everyone likes to snack now and then, but what might be a surprise is the list of U.S. states most obsessed with snacking, in general. I’ll be honest, I expected to find my current state Florida at the top of the list somewhere, but that’s not the case. Actually, I’ll be surprised if you do guess what state is at the top.

No, it’s not Texas or California. You ready? It’s Hawaii. Hawaii Snack-O. Crazy, right? Guess who else is on the list. New Hampshire is in second, followed by Maine and Vermont. Then, Montana, Oregon, Wyoming, and Colorado. Whoa. Let’s dig into the data, shall we?

Who conducted this study on snacking?

The data actually comes from Food Label Maker. To find the information, the researchers analyzed household food and beverage spending data across all 50 states. Thanks to consumer behavior benchmarks, they discovered that 3.5% of all food and beverage spending is allocated to snacks. Then, breaking that down further, they separated snacking into two categories, including sweet (32.4%) and savory (67.6%). Each state’s favorite snack was also identified through regional search interest and purchase trend analysis.

But the top ten states are:

  • Hawaii with $19.06 million in snack spending (per 100K residents)
  • New Hampshire with $18.70 million
  • Maine with $18.28 million
  • Vermont with $17.85 million
  • Montana with $17.19 million
  • Oregon with $17.03 million
  • Wyoming with $16.96 million
  • Colorado with $16.84 million
  • Massachusetts with $16.56 million
  • Alaska with T16.56 million

Perhaps, most surprising is that in Alaska, even with its remote location and lower populace per capita, snack spending is not slowed down at all. Snack culture thrives even in remote regions. Like I said, everybody loves their snacks!

As for their favorites, most states love Rice Krispies Treats (New Hampshire) or Chex Mix (Hawaii). Wyoming is the standout, with people there always munching on Fritos. I also can’t believe so many of y’all like Chex Mix. Wow. I would not classify that as a super tasty or satisfying snack, but whatever.

What can we infer from this tech insights data on snacking?

Well, we certainly know that people all over love snacking and spending on those snacks is not slowed regardless of populace, isolation or state size. Honestly, the fact that Hawaii sits at the top is kind of wild, even with tourism being what it is there. I certainly expected to see some of the larger states on the list, but many of them are nowhere to be seen, at least in the top ten.

In case anyone was wondering, like me, Florida sits in spot number twelve, while California is just above that in spot eleven, and Texas is much further down at spot thirty-seven. Texans’ and Californian’s favorite snack is Cheetos, while Floridians love Doritos.

A spokesperson from Food Label Maker, who conducted the study, says: “Snack spending isn’t just about indulgence—it’s a reflection of how people live. From rural regions to urban centers, snacking habits reveal patterns in routine, access, and emotional comfort. What we reach for between meals often says more about our pace of life and cultural memory than any traditional grocery trend.”

Indeed, fellow spokesperson. Indeed.
